How do solar batteries generate savings?

Live solar

When the sun shines, your solar panels will produce free power for your home.
That means you don’t have to purchase expensive electricity from the grid. You’ll experience those savings as a direct reduction in the amount of power you purchase from the grid.

Stored solar

Often when your solar panels are producing their most power in the middle of the day, you may not be at home to use it. By storing that excess solar production in a battery, you can enjoy your free solar power when you are home in the evening.

Stored cheap power

If you’ve got extra space left in your battery after you’ve stored all your excess solar power, then you can save even more money by using that spare battery capacity to store cheap off-peak power to use later during the expensive peak periods.

Sell to the grid

If your battery is full and your solar panels are still producing more power than you need, then with Evergen you can sell that excess power back to the grid. The income you receive will be shown on your normal electricity bill, offsetting your other charges.

Solar battery savings by location

Electricity rates, sunshine and available subsidies all affect the savings you’ll receive from your system.

Savings depend on a range of factors. That’s why we conduct individual estimates for our clients before there is any commitment to buy. But to give you an idea of the sort of savings that are possible, we’ve put together some indicative estimates. The figures below are based on Evergen modelling taking into account the various electricity tariffs, subsidies and solar irradiance in each location. We’ve modelled a  system size that is one of our most common configurations with 5kW of solar and 11.5kWh of battery storage. We’ve also assumed a typical house with 4 bedrooms, air conditioning and pool, with an annual electricity consumption of 10MWh.

  • Solar subsidy – available (Small Scale Renewable Energy Scheme).
  • Battery subsidy – available (Next Generation Energy Storage Program).
QLD

QLD has very good conditions for solar battery savings with high electricity tariffs and high solar irradiance.

  • Solar irradiance – very good.
  • Tariff suitability – very good. High average costs. Time of use rates available. High feed in tariff.
  • Solar subsidy – available (Small Scale Renewable Energy Scheme).
  • Battery subsidy – not available.
VIC

VIC has good conditions for solar battery savings. Electricity tariffs have increased in 2018 as have standard feed in tariffs.

Our estimated savings are based on electricity rates today. But if prices rise in the future, so will your savings.

Electricity prices in many parts of Australia have more than doubled in the last 10 years. There is a huge amount of saving available by intelligently managing when and how your battery charges and discharges. Unfortunately most battery systems don’t take into account your tariff structure, usage patterns or solar production forecast so can’t make smart decisions about how to operate your system. Evergen uses Energy Intelligence developed by CSIRO that constantly learns your usage patterns, forecasts your solar production based on the weather and optimises your energy source between solar, battery and grid.

Active Management

To get maximum savings from your solar battery system, it has to perform day in day out for year after year. Unfortunately, energy systems are complex and can be impacted by external factors like your internet connection or electricity network service. That means systems can often experience faults and without a professional managing the system for you, it’s up to you to identify when a fault occurs and who to contact to fix it. In such cases, the first you may know about a fault could be a high electricity bill months down the track.

How does Evergen estimate your savings for solar batteries?

1. Home energy profile analysis

How much energy you use and when you use it is critical to understand to determine your potential savings. Evergen assesses key energy profile indicators such as home size, number of occupants and major electrical loads to determine the potential of your home to save energy with Evergen.

2. Irradiance analysis

The more sun that falls on your roof, the more you can benefit from solar power.
Evergen uses state of the art tools to analyse where your home is located, local weather patterns, shading issues, and the area, orientation and pitch of your roof to determine how much solar power can potentially be harvested.

3. Solar design

Every home is different. That’s why we use experts to assess your roof and design a layout of solar panels that is optimal for your specific situation. We locate panels in the areas where they will be most productive, avoiding any areas that may be impacted by shading from nearby trees or other buildings.

4. Tariff rate analysis

Your electricity tariff has a huge impact on how much you can save with solar batteries. We look at the tariffs available in your particular location and assess which would work best to drive maximum savings with your system, which gives you a very accurate assessment of potential savings. Often tariffs with a high peak rate and a low off peak rate work well, as Evergen can use its Energy Intelligence to shift your average grid consumption towards the cheaper off peak rate.

5. Solar battery system simulation

Once we understand your home’s energy profile, the solar irradiance available on your roof, your solar panel design and tariff rates, Evergen uses sophisticated modelling to simulate how your system will perform across an entire year. The results of that simulation provide you with the most accurate estimate available for your potential solar battery savings.
